Again,let's learn from Oz how to maintain credible defense force
with minimum or zero hard ware.
If i tell u only one or zero air tanker is in service for RAAF,
u wont believe.Neither i dunt believe until i read in black and white,
provided by RAAF.

1.The Boeing 707 tanker/transport (MRTT) was retired
in end of June,after 29 years of service.

Further proof;
‘City of Sydney’ was one of two remaining B707s in service with 33 Squadron at RAAF Base Richmond. The other B707, ‘Richmond Town’, is due to be retired in June 2008.

The first plan just completed conversion in Madrid.
The remainder 4 plans are to be converted in Brisbane,
under the charge of Qantas Airways.
The future of the RAAF’s air-to-air refuelling capability will be the EADS/Airbus KC-30B Multi-Role Tanker Transport, due for delivery to the RAAF commencing in early 2009.

The RAAF's tanker program is taking shape in Spain with first flight of EADS' new boom refuelling system expected later this year(2008)...
Due to be delivered from 2008, these multi-role aircraft will replace the RAAF's three ageing Boeing 707 tankers.

“We are on track and proud of the results we are getting, right in line with our expectations. We are becoming a reference in the air-to-air refuelling technology and systems with the market’s acknowledgement,” said Carlos Suarez, Head of EADS Military Transport Aircraft Division and Chairman of EADS CASA.
Flight-testing of the A330 MRTT, the first production aircraft for the RAAF, has continued at a fast pace and initial handling and performance evaluation are as predicted.
All aerodynamic tests for the A330 MRTT have been completed successfully, as well as testing of handling quality, performance, loads, autopilot and anemometry.
An important feature of the process included flutter testing and the flight envelope has been successfully cleared.
Civil Certification flight tests with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) are scheduled to be performed next.

Even so,Mid air refuel can extend combat range,unless RAAF want to

ai yo... who in the right mind will attack OZ, especially landing troops there? and can land then say lor... plus.. why would a defence force need to extend it combat range???? they wan to DEFENCE till where?

So far ,the main points u all put is No body will give trouble
to Oz.Therefore,wether it is one or 5 air tanker in services
do not matter.
Well.If Oz think No body will disturb them,then why did they order
billion of dollars of the controversial Super hornets and
JSF ,3 Airwarfare Destoryer--AWD and even thinking of
new subs with cruise missiles?

Why does Oz spend more than A$20 billion on defense annually,
almost the gavaman expenditure of Singapore!
Oz is rich in underground resources.This is the magnet for
wrong thinking to disturb Oz.
In WW2,Germany sub approached the shore of Oz...

However,I find the author is too confident on the capabilty on
RAAF in the ability in air refuelling.This is one of the 3 factors
he put RAAF has the edge over Asiasn air force.
But he forgets the CURRENT in service situation of mid air refuel
tanker in Oz!!
As at the date of publication in July 2008,ALL old air tanker were
retired and NO new tanker is officially in service.
Just one is under post- conversion testing.
Further,the old tankers have been retiring in the recent years.
So,how many pilots,both for air tanker
and other RAAF pilots,NOW capable for mid air refuel is a question mark.
Ironically, the most contentious of
capabilities—the Royal Australian Air Force’s
(RAAF) air combat force—is actually very well
placed to meet any regional challenge. The air
forces of Southeast Asia are likely to remain
modest in size and will not have the full suite

2.Credible defense force is a big chip in negotiation
In 2 nd century or 21 st century.
Armed Force is the main power when u have dispute
with other countries.Who knows u will has a dispute?
When u cant resolve in negotitation table....
No body know when u need to push the button to activate
armed force.....and when do u need the air tanker...
Dunt rely on FPDA,which is a one way assistance to help
Singapore,but not the other way round.
SG,UK,MY and NZ dunt hAVE THE obligation to help Oz.
Besides,there is no fighters in NZ.

Conversion work on the aircraft was carried out at ST Aerospace's US facility, ST Mobile Aerospace Engineering (MAE), where MAE converted the aircraft from an all passenger arrangement to a multi-role configuration that allows the carriage of passenger, freight, mixed passenger-freight, Very-Important-Persons (VIP) and Aero-Medical Evacuation.

It is a shame to see Australia only has one air tanker at the moment. However we are getting 5 and these planes are brand new.
The lack of air tankers impedes an air force's ability to conduct offensive missions, however in terms of defence of a nation, there really isn't an issue since airbases are present. You don't have airbases in countries you're trying to attack, hence the need for tankers.
So lionnoisy, you got your facts right, it's just that you're a spastic when it comes to interpreting them.

Actually I don't see why lionnoisy is making such a big issue of this, given in his opinion the RAAF is going to launch their F-18s from their "mini cvs" instead of having to fly them from the mainland.

I remember that crazy idea he had! Flying F18s off our LHDs. What a nut!
1. Not possible.
2. Difficult politically. Can you imagine the ramifications across SE Asia if Australia were to have a "miniCV"? Australia is after defence not offence. Aircraft carriers are seen as offensive weapons, hence Japan tries to avoid the issue as well.
As for me, hell yeah I'd love to see Australia get back into the CV business. It's been 25 years since Australia last had one.
