    • I’m from the IT industry, so far I’m taking the entrepreneur route and so far so good, I love doing what I am doing and my time is extremely flexible. I’m also studying part time, so hoping to get my Ph.D before 30, it’s a backup plan for me in case things don’t work out. There are a few people whom I have to take care and knowing the kind of risk that I am in, I don’t want to drag them down with me in case things go bad. I’m 27 now by the way.

I can barely remember when is the actual date that I started, because I began doing things even from a tender age, if that counts as entreprenuership. I made simple drawings and sold them to my classmates, and then later on, I started building websites, and then it was only recently my hobby was able to support both me and my gf's lifestyle and paying off all the bills and school fees. My school fees alone costs $1k/month. The date doesn't really matter to me, every step is an experience, along the way I faced plenty of critics but I followed my heart, I'm extremely driven. And the reasons why, it's not for money, partly perhaps but mostly it's because of my passion. I love doing things that I enjoy doing and the money is just bonus, and the time flexibility is great, I wake up in the afternoon and go shopping and then come back to do my work.

That's exactly the same reason why I want to start my own business as well... Not for the money, but for my interests, flexibility of time and just that I can't stand a normal 8 to 5 desk job.. heh... But its been hard trying to get a startup going... been at this for a few months and my site's still not done yet... Sometimes it does get a bit discouraging...

    • Well, if you want to have a try or taste of entreprenuership, then try sell badminton rackets, grips and accessories lor.... nothing to loose. A good challenge for your self to see how many you can sell. Since you are into badminton anyway rite? No need any high capitals.

I think other might have a easy route, if one have all the "things" and "quality" straighten out.
Starting out because of passion in my trade, and never really consider about thing on how to acquire customer, marketing, and networking. I thought can rely on existing contact, but it doesn't really turn out that well. Along the way, luck play a part in getting to closed some "big" deal, and some "gui ren" render some help. Now still struggle. Journey not easy. Really need investment to reach the next step.

unfortunately, in SG, the concept of entrepreneurship is often seen as laughable by almost everyone until the day you get your big break, and then they won't be laughing or jeering at you anymore.
to them, you'll be classified in the same category as those Singapore Idol and Project Superstar hopefuls, losers and "day-dreamers".

i really salute everyone who dares to strike out, especially in SG. Wink

most uni students in fact if are doing it either on their own or part of their project work either in CCA or School project..

to be able to ignore the mockery from others etc...is the difference between a big earner in future verus a small earner for life..

      that's the difference between a employer-to-be (entrepreneur/boss) and a employee-to-be(worker/employee)

    • Entrepreneurs huh?

I have my finger on a few business schools and english languages school. These schools run on a business model I developed during my tertiary years. It covers everything from employee relations, students, right down to marketing strategies.

I dont think I would call that entrepreneurship. I think in this cutthroat business world, one should have good business acumen and take the necessay risks to succeed.

    • Well in the case of entrepreneurship, i very much delve in the mode of "hit and run" business. Meaning, i pay close attention to the current trends and exploit them to my target customers. Just last month alone, on a capital of $3000, i managed to break even in 20 days and reaped 2x profits after 2 months. I buy niche clothes all over Japan,Taiwan and Hong Kong and sell them back here to my power buyers (rich teens and young working adults) Mr. Green

    • I turned down the opportunity to become an entrepreneur. In my university I won entrepreneurship competition & took the prize of SG$2500. The first piece of advice is this: Not everyone is cut out for it. Stop dreaming of riches & think to yourself why you should be successful & why the product/service you're offering is good.

Investment angels look at 3 things:
      1. People - are you top of what you do & capable of putting the right ingredients in character & mentality together.
      2. Product - just how good is this idea? What gap in the market have you spotted? Is it financially viable?
      3. Business plan - just what steps are you going to take to set-up & launch? What's in it for the investor? What strategies do you have?

My team was comprised of other students from my university, we specialised in Information Systems, Materials, Electrical, & Computing. The advantage we had was our technical knowledge, we actually built a working prototype, identified steps to take in order to get market awareness, put together scenarios on P&L etc. Despite winning that prize we didn't go ahead with it. Starting a business is still risky & basically we were all capable of getting great jobs with great firms. Perhaps one day we'll turn around & think about going ahead with it after like 10 years of success in the corporate sector.
